Dr. Gabor Mate has given me so so much insight over the years. He truly is amazing and has a gift of understanding and expressing deep sufferings that most cannot comprehend. He has been so helpful in my journey and I’m so happy he has a new book!!!

Elise, thank you for sharing. I’m so delighted to hear that you’ve also gained so many insights and support on your own journey from Dr Gabor Mate’s work. He really does have such a depth of understanding, a way of expressing these ideas clearly and wisdom and compassion, which is so needed on the planet right now.

Thank you for the recommendation. I recently watched a YouTube video of a zoom meeting between Dr Robert Lustig and Dr Gabor Mate where they discussed Dr Mate’s new book. This was the first time I had ever heard of or seen Dr Mate but I already knew of Paediatric Endocrinologist Dr Lustig (and his mission to educate people about the dangers of eating sugar).

How can we heal the trauma? Do we need to identify the exact cause of it first? Can we heal it on our own? And can we help someone else to heal their trauma? Is this covered in the book?

Maybe I just need to read the book to find out.

As always your posts are very helpful and informative. 🙏

The interview between Gabor Mate and Dr Lustig sounds fascinating. Thanks for recommending this one.

Yes, absolutely the Myth of Normal book does cover many of the areas you’ve asked about. In my experience of working with many highly sensitive people, they often like to understand their traumas, including the roots, before finding their ways of healing.

Healing trauma is going to be so unique for each individual but a key element is learning to cultivate self compassion for ourselves and all the parts of us which did not receive the nurturing, soothing and safety which we needed at the time.

Healing is a process which can be done either alone or with others. However, I really do feel there are so many amazing benefits to doing this work in a community of like minded others. In The HSP Revolution membership community opening soon, these are some of the areas we will be able to look at.

So pleased you’re finding these posts helpful. Thanks as always for your sharing 🙏

Thank you for your reply.

I am particularly interested to know if it is possible to help someone else heal their trauma as my adult daughter very recently told me she hates ‘all of herself’. She suspects she might have ADHD but I wonder if she is an HSP. Anyway, she has been seeking professional help to identify what, if anything, is ‘wrong’ with her. Naturally I am very worried. I suggested she listen to your recent interview with the resilience coach (sorry I can’t remember her name) where you mention the difference between ADHD and HSP. After listening to it my daughter told me she didn’t think she was an HSP, although to me she has all the traits. I also told her about Elaine Aron’s book which she knew I had read but she refused to borrow it. Can a mum help a grown up daughter to heal? Or is she the wrong person to even try?

Thank you for this recommendation by Dr Gabor. This really does look like a really fascinating and insightful book, I'm going to get a copy! I've long wondered why so many people are struggling, I have also spoken to health professionals regarding what is normal in todays society and what the heck do we mean by that? Oh I really like the excerpt that you highlighted; "the unfolding of human potential is spontaneous but not inevitable....We all grow older but we don't all grow up.” Yesterday I was reflecting on why it is so many people do not develop but keep falling into the same old patterns? Jung said something along the lines that person who integrates and owns a broad repertoire of their traits (including their shadow side) can be considered a mature adult.

Thank you for this. I too have gotten a lot out of Dr Gabor Mate's work, and have been looking forward to this new book, and this is the first review I've seen. Sounds like it everything one has come to expect from this doctor! Thank you Gary for sharing your brilliantly, informative review. A great reminder of the importance of restorative, nourishing relationships for our health. I did not know the work of Bonnie Badenoch, so will definitely be exploring.
