I felt quite tearful reading the interview with Emma. So much of it resonated with me, particularly the "chatterbox" and going shopping with my mum for clothes I so didn't want to wear! It was a horrible experience and left me feeling completely unheard and unvalued.
I'm going to start the New Year by clearing out my few clothes - I still hate shopping so have very little, and I'll attempt being brave and buying something different that makes me feel good. Thank you
Sue, it's very moving to hear your response to the interview with Emma. Thank you for sharing what resonated with you. I like that you gave voice to this point about going shopping with your mum and having horrible experiences because so many others in this community will feel the same. I was really interested to learn from Emma how much our historical childhood experiences of shopping and female role models, impacts our relationship and attitudes to clothes and shopping in adulthood.
Good luck with the New Year clothing clear out and being brave with finding something that feels good. Would love to hear how you get on.
Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and New Year too. Look forward to connecting again in 2023!
I’m so sorry my article made you tearful. I’m really sad to hear you have horrible shopping memories from your childhood.
As I discussed with Dr Genevieve, there is such a link with negative early experiences of clothes shopping that can carry into adulthood and impact self esteem and a hatred of shopping.
If you’d like my help, I’d be more than happy to have a chat and give some (free) advice on how to approach your wardrobe clear out and shopping for your wardrobe. I also share lots of styling tips on my instagram @stylingyouwell
I wish you all the best and a wonderful Christmas and fabulous 2023.
Thank you for your kind reply Emma. The tears were useful as it allowed me to realise how little I think of myself. I never really connected my dread of shopping with my self worth before!
I’m not great with the technology of these platforms but will follow you on Instagram and contact you from there. Interestingly I’m feeling uncomfortable for taking up your time with a potential chat as I don’t feel worth it! I’m not saying that to get a response but it’s just such a strong realisation that I can’t help but to express it. I guess I’m becoming aware of things due to the serendipity of some things coming together over the past few weeks, which feels empowering actually. Can’t even believe I’m writing this stuff in public lol. I normally hide away and void these things like the plague! Have a lovely Christmas and I hope your NewYear brings you good things. Thank you.
