It is all to easy to slip back into old patterns that are detrimental and lead to burnout. Last week I was pressured into working very long and unreasonable hours. The extra work disrupted my routine and the lack of sleep left me reaching for the coffee jar and not eating properly. In the past I would have rewarded myself with a well-earned drink, which would mean even poorer sleep, performance and low mood the next day and so it goes on like a hamster in a wheel. Sometimes you have to take a step back to see where you have been going wrong. Poor habits and weak boundaries spiral to the inevitable burnout, thankfully the opposite true!
Matt, thank you for such an honest share on your own patterns which led to burnout in the past. It's helpful for other HSPs in this community to hear this because we all have these struggles and it's good to recognise that we really are not alone. It's not always easy not to reach for that well-earned drink, or binge eat, or smoke or whatever your go to "comfort" thing is in those low moments. However, continuing self awareness, understanding and a huge dose of self compassion really helps!
Yes self-compassion is good advice; being your own best friend is something I’m working on. I’m finding sharing ideas is of great benefit; if I can contribute then thats great, plus writing helps me construct a clearer picture.
