I'm Giving a Talk on Parenting Highly Sensitive Children
Sharing tools for navigating the unique challenges and joys of raising a Highly Sensitive Child at the HSP Awakening virtual summit.
I’ll be giving a talk Conscious Parenting: Raising the next generation of Highly Sensitive Children at the HSP Awakening virtual summit at 1400 BST on October 3, 2023. Register for the summit for free to hear from me and two dozen other practitioners dedicated to providing Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) with the tools we need to thrive.
I first began to learn about high sensitivity a decade ago, when I was searching for a deeper understanding of the children and teenagers I was seeing while working as a psychologist in the UK’s National Health Service.
Some of these young people seemed to experience their big feelings far more intensely than seemed typical; think very deeply about the meaning of life, or global issues; and often be extremely sensitive to noise, light, scents or even the fabric of their clothes.
Thanks to the work of Dr Elaine Aron, the psychologist who coined the term “Highly Sensitive Person (HSP),” I discovered that many of these kids were probably Highly Sensitive Children — members of the 20-30 percent of the population who process sensory input, thoughts and emotions more deeply than most.
Emotional Intelligence
Working with these young people and their families, I saw first-hand how challenging they could be to parent — as well as being constantly amazed at the wealth of emotional intelligence, insight and creativity they possessed. Now mother to a strong-willed, highly sensitive five-year-old daughter, I’ve had to put a lot of what I learned through working with these families into practice.
I’m delighted to be sharing some of my most effective practical tips in my session Conscious Parenting: Raising the next generation of Highly Sensitive Children at the HSP Awakening virtual summit at 1400 BST on October 3, 2023. You can register for free to watch my talk and presentations by two dozen other practitioners, including co-hosts Jen Corcoran and Joshua Speraneo, here.
Rapid Change
When parents first contact me, they’re often feeling drained; assume that they’re failing; and are giving themselves a hard time for not doing a “better job.”
They’re looking for support because their Highly Sensitive Child is facing these kinds of challenges:
Intense emotional reactions
Meltdowns
Struggling with aggression and defiance
Not listening
Getting into arguments
Withdrawn, or showing hyperactive behaviours
Change can happen fast when parents learn more about the ways in which a Highly Sensitive Child’s temperament affects the way they experience the world — and how easily their nervous system can become overwhelmed.
I'll be sharing my insights into:
How and why Highly Sensitive Children push our buttons
How your child’s sensitivity shapes how they experience the world
Day-to-day strategies for helping your child to avoid meltdowns
How raising a Highly Sensitive Child demands a new approach to parenting
You’ll gain a new perspective on your child’s challenges, and clear guidance on steps you can take right now to transform the stresses of parenting into a greater sense of confidence, connection and flow.
You can find out more about the summit and register here.
Hope to see you there!
Oh my goodness, this looks so helpful! I am so sad I missed it!
